Catania and the little towns of its province celebrate the most beautiful seasons of the year with a great number of meetings and events.
Trecastagni, the 10th of May celebrates the Patron St. Alfio with the evocative procession of the penitents who arrive bare-foot, walking for kilometres to St. Alfio's church to show their devotion. In the background of the procession you can find a little market with stalls full of fresh garlic and a band playing classical music in the square. In Macchia di Giarre between the 22th and 25th of June there is the 24th festival of the cherries with a parade of folkloristic groups and Sicilian handcart. The 24th of June, during St. John's feast, Acitrezza, a lovely sea-town, famous for Verga's "Malavoglia", organizes a typical representation "u pisci a mari" (the fish in the water). It consists in the hunting of a man disguised as a fish who escapes the capture between the rocks of the Ciclopi. For St. Peter's feast, the 29th of June, Riposto organizes a procession of the Saint's statue on a fishing boat, sailing to Torre Archirafi's mole, escorted by other boats. Catania, from June to September organizes every evening in the fair centre "Le Ciminiere" a series of musical, theatrical and dancing manifestations.
