NEW YEAR'S DAY IN CATANIA
Come
and celebrate the New year's day in our beautiful city! Every
year Catania organizes a great party right in the Cathedral
Square, close to our home, with every kind of entertainment,
open-doors disco, theatrical representations and fireworks.
With the New year's sunset you can also admire then the enchanting
landscape from the highest European volcano: the Etna. A generous,
majestic volcano. With its threatening huge frame, it is both
beloved and mistrusted.

AGATA'S PARTY
The
party is the most important religious event for the inhabitans
of Catania who take part to it with a great religious devotion,
following the procession of the "Vara" (which contains
the body of the Saint), through various routes along the main
streets of the city from the third to the fifth of February.
The program of the celebrations develops anyway in the first
two weeks of the month. The religious aspect of the party
combines with the edonistic one: the procession
EASTER
IN SICILY
The
province of Catania during the Holy Week and at Easter organizes
a series of interesting events from a cultural and folkloristic
point of view. In Adrano, during the "Holy Saturday",
you can assist to the theatrical representation "La Diavolata",
a religious drama, dating back to the 1728. Caltagirone too,
famous for the handcraft ceramics, remembers the holy week
with religious processions and typical exhibitions. Between
April and May in Caltagirone you can assist to the International
Exhibition of handcraft whistles, with more than 300 examples
coming from all over the world and the "Blooming ladder",
monumental ladder in S. Maria del Monte During the Angel's
Monday, Palagonia on the other hand, organizes a procession
for St. Febronia with the famous "spaccata della pigna",
a popular manifestation coming from the peasants' tradition.
CARNIVAL IN ACIREALE
At
just 15 Km north from Catania, Acireale, one of the "jewels"of
Sicilian Barocco, oganizes every year the greatest Carnival
in Sicily. With the marvellous allegorical floats , music
in the streets and squares, disguised people who dance joyful
until late night. This lovely little town , rich of art and
history will remain for a long time in your heart. SPRING
AND SUMMER IN SICILY
Catania
and the little towns of its province celebrate the most beautiful
seasons of the year with a great number of meetings and events.
Trecastagni, the 10th of May celebrates the Patron St. Alfio
with the evocative procession of the penitents who arrive
bare-foot, walking for kilometres to St. Alfio's church to
show their devotion. In the background of the procession you
can find a little market with stalls full of fresh garlic
and a band playing classical music in the square. In Macchia
di Giarre between the 22th and 25th of June there is the 24th
festival of the cherries with a parade of folkloristic groups
and Sicilian handcart. The 24th of June , during St. John's
feast, Acitrezza, a lovely sea-town, famous for Verga's "Malavoglia",
organizes a typical representation " u pisci a mari"
(the fish in the water). It consists in the hunting of a man
disguised as a fish who escapes the capture between the rocks
of the Ciclopi. For St. Peter's feast, the 29th of June ,
Riposto organizes a procession of the Saint's statue on a
fishing boat, sailing to Torre Archirafi's mole, escorted
by other boats. Catania, from June to September organizes
every evening in the fair centre "Le Ciminiere"
a series of musical, theatrical and dancing manifestations.
